Six moms singled out for awards WHITTIER – Six single mothers attending Whittier College have been awarded a combined $30,000 in scholarships from the Assistance League of Whittier. The recipients are Kristine Campiri, 40; Jessica Cerda, 26; Connie Ornelas, 35; Melissa Perez, 23; Silvia Perdue, 33; and Deidren Valdez, 22. The scholarships are given to single mothers who are heads of their households and taking at least nine units at Whittier College or Rio Hondo College. These recipients live in Whittier, have at least a 2.5 grade-point average, and need financial support to stay in college. For more information about the Assistance League, call (562) 693-6533. Spring registration time at Cerritos NORWALK – Registration for Cerritos College’s Spring 2008 sessions – which range from nine weeks to 18 weeks – is already under way at the campus, 11110 Alondra Blvd. Next spring, the college will offer a new “Hand Care for Court Reporters” (BUSC 11) course by a former court reporter-turned medical professional. The class is aimed at anyone who frequently engages in repetitive motion tasks with their hands. It will be offered during the college’s second 9-week spring session and runs from March 14-May 6. New, used items for sale at school WHITTIER – Whittier High School will hold a holiday fair and swap meet to sell new and used items 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 12417 Philadelphia St. More than 30 vendors will be selling crocheted purses, custom woodcraft items and holiday wreaths, among others. The proceeds will go to the school’s Puente Program, which exposes high-schoolers to colleges and universities while keeping them on the college track. WHITTIER – Reading volunteers are being sought by Laurel Elementary School to work with children for at least one hour every other week at the campus, 13550 Lambert Road. Extensive three-hour training is provided to volunteers to teach them special reading techniques.
